Associate Adviser Matt takes on his first half marathon
Associate Adviser Matt Last has decided to take on his first half marathon in support of the Relief Run 2020. I spoke to Matt to find out more about the Relief Run.
What made you choose this particular half-marathon to do as your first?
Having heard the stories from people I know that are in the RFS and live on the South Coast, I was inspired by their bravery and resilience in getting through this disaster. As I’m not the strongest runner, taking on this challenge will definitely test my resilience.
Australia has, and currently continues to experience one of the country’s worst national disasters in history. The south-eastern corner of the country has been hit with severe bushfires over the last few months, with lives lost, homes burnt to the ground, and significant wildlife population wiped out.
The RFS and the South Coast communities (of which I know people in both) have endured a horrid time over the festive season. Their resolve has been tested to the maximum. As my way to make an active contribution to the relief effort for the South Coast, I too am going to test my resolve to the maximum and run for 21km in support of Relief Run 2020.
Relief Run is using footsteps (like mine) to support those in need. In collaboration with the Australian Red Cross, all funds raised will go to the community in helping support those affected by bushfire, including by providing psychosocial support to people, supporting 21 relief centres across NSW, Victoria and South Australia, distributing food and water in Victoria, and greeting people evacuated by air and sea.
Have you been training for this half-marathon?
As I only found out about Relief Run last Tuesday, my training has been very minimal! I will need to draw on my experience of numerous City-2-Surfs and my days playing aussie rules to ensure I can complete this half-marathon.
What areas will this half-marathon cover?
The great thing about Relief Run is that you can run your own course, at your own pace, in your own time. I’ll be pounding the pavement around my local suburbs of Engadine, Loftus and Sutherland in the Sutherland Shire.
Please head to https://reliefrun.com.au/funds to make your donation where your donations go to The Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund that will deploy 1,285 trained staff and volunteers to disaster-affected communities
We look forward to hearing all about Matt’s marathon journey.
